Cases we focus on

Serious injuries. Careful, thorough representation.

The firm concentrates on cases where an injury has a lasting effect on someone's health, work and family, such as brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and severe burns.

Trucking accidents

Crashes involving tractor-trailers, delivery trucks and other commercial vehicles, where injuries are often severe and more than one company may be responsible.

Serious motor vehicle crashes

Car, motorcycle and pedestrian crashes that cause brain or spinal cord injuries, fractures that need surgery, or other lasting harm.

Nursing home neglect and abuse

Bedsores, falls, malnutrition, medication errors and other harm to a loved one in a nursing home or care facility.

Wrongful death

Families who have lost someone because of another person's negligence.

Construction and workplace accidents

Falls, equipment failures and defective products, including claims beyond workers' compensation.

Our focus

Serious injuries and complex claims.

Our practice focuses on serious injuries and complex claims, rather than a high volume of minor accident matters. Taking on fewer cases means each one gets the time, the experts and the trial preparation it needs.

Cases that often need this kind of attention

  • An injury with lasting or permanent effects
  • Surgery, long-term treatment or time out of work
  • Harm to a loved one in a nursing home or care facility
  • A death in the family caused by someone's negligence

Not sure how serious it is?

Injuries aren't always clear at first. Some, like concussions and back injuries, can turn out to be more serious than they seemed. If you aren't sure, reach out. The consultation is free, and we'll give you an honest answer.

Our approach

How a serious injury case gets built.

Life-altering injuries have long-term costs. A claim has to account for future care, lost earning capacity and how the injury changes daily life, which takes careful work, not a quick settlement.

  1. Investigate what happenedRecords, witnesses and the evidence that shows who was responsible.
  2. Understand the medical pictureMedical experts help explain the diagnosis, the treatment and what recovery will realistically look like.
  3. Account for the futureLife care planners, economists and vocational experts help measure future care and lost earning capacity.
  4. Prepare to go to trialCases are prepared so they can be presented to a jury if a fair resolution isn't reached.

Connecticut law

What Connecticut law means for a serious injury claim.

Who pays. Connecticut is an at-fault state. The person who caused the crash, through their insurance, is generally responsible. In serious injury cases, one policy often isn't enough, so other coverage, such as your own underinsured motorist coverage, can matter.

Fault. You can still recover if you were partly at fault, as long as your share isn't greater than the combined fault of those you're claiming against. Your recovery is reduced by your percentage of fault.

The future counts. Connecticut law recognizes the cost of future medical care, custodial care and lost earning capacity, not just the bills you already have.

Deadlines that apply in Connecticut

2 yearsinjury claimsFrom the date of injury or discovery, and generally no more than 3 years after the incident.
2 yearswrongful deathFrom the date of death, and generally no more than 5 years after the incident.
Over 50%faultRecovery is barred if your share of fault is greater than the others' combined.
Soonersome claimsClaims against a town or the state can have much shorter notice deadlines.

Every case is different. The Connecticut Injury Firm, LLC can explain how these rules apply to yours.

Serious injuries

What counts as a catastrophic injury?

Generally, an injury with lasting or permanent effects, such as a traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury or paralysis, amputation, severe burns, or an injury that keeps someone from returning to work. Every case is evaluated on its own facts.

Why do serious injury cases take longer?

The full cost of a serious injury often isn't clear until treatment has progressed and doctors can say what the future looks like. Settling too early can leave future care and lost income out of the picture.

Should I talk to the other side's insurance company?

You don't have to give them a recorded statement right away. Their adjuster works for their company. It's reasonable to stick to basic facts and get advice before you say more or sign anything.

Connecticut law

How long do I have to file a claim in Connecticut?

In most negligence cases, a lawsuit must be filed within two years from the date the injury is first sustained or discovered, and no more than three years from the act that caused it. Wrongful death claims generally must be brought within two years from the date of death and no more than five years from the act. Some claims, such as those against a town or the state, have much shorter notice deadlines, so it's better not to wait.

What if I was partly at fault?

You may still have a claim. Connecticut reduces your recovery by your percentage of fault, and bars recovery only if your share is greater than the combined fault of those you're claiming against.

Who pays my medical bills after a crash?

Connecticut is an at-fault state, so there is no no-fault (PIP) coverage. Your health insurance and any medical payments coverage on your auto policy may pay bills as they come in, and those costs become part of the claim against the at-fault party. Keep every bill and record.

Working with the firm

How are fees handled?

Consultations are free. If the firm takes your case, the fee arrangement and how costs are handled are explained in a written agreement before any work begins.

Do you take every case?

The firm focuses on serious injuries and complex claims, rather than a high volume of minor accident matters, so it takes on a smaller number of cases. If you aren't sure how serious your injury is, reach out anyway. We'll listen, and if your situation isn't a fit for our practice, we'll tell you honestly.

I already have a lawyer. Can I still talk to you?

You're always free to get a second opinion. If you reach out, we'll listen and be straightforward about whether there's anything we can do.
